PetSafe

The widest range on this site, and the one that sells you the most afterwards

PetSafe appears on this site more often than any other maker, across three of our twelve families. That is not a preference — it is what the catalogue looks like. Between the ScoopFree litter boxes, the Drinkwell ceramic fountains and the microchip flaps, PetSafe covers more of this niche than anyone else.

What we found writing the reviews

The specifications are published, and they are specific. Capacities in litres, litter types stated plainly, chip standards named. The ScoopFree Ultra says “crystal litter only” rather than leaving the buyer to discover it, and the Drinkwell carbon filter listing names the five fountains it fits. That is better documentation than most of this market provides.

The running costs are where the money is. A ScoopFree with disposable trays is a machine sold near cost and repaid in refills, several times a year, for as long as you own it. PetSafe also sells the reusable tray that ends that cycle, which is unusually honest — but the default purchase is the expensive one.

The health claims need reading carefully. Several fountain listings state that circulating water prevents urinary and kidney disease. We report that as PetSafe’s wording. What can be said plainly is narrower: some cats drink more from moving water.

Availability

PetSafe references are among the most consistent on this site. Most are listed on all six of our markets under a single reference, and where one is missing — usually the US store — the review says so.

Every PetSafe product we have reviewed

  • PetSafe ScoopFree Clumping

Clumping litter · rake · no trays required

The ScoopFree built around ordinary clumping litter instead of crystals, with a waste bin rather than a disposable tray. It is the cheaper box to run of the two, and the one that lets you keep the litter your cat already accepts.

Best for: Anyone who wants the scooping to stop without changing litter brand, and who would rather have no app than a mediocre one.

    ≈ $220 / £250 / 275 €

  • PetSafe ScoopFree SmartSpin

Any litter · sifting drum · sealed waste box · app

PetSafe’s drum box: it turns to sift clumps into a sealed waste box, takes any litter, and reports weight and visits to an app. It is the most expensive PetSafe here and the only one that is litter-agnostic.

Best for: A household that wants a sealed drum and the freedom to keep buying whatever litter the cat already accepts.

    ≈ £400 / 395 €

  • PetSafe ScoopFree Ultra

Crystal litter only · top entry · disposable tray

The hooded, top-entry ScoopFree rakes crystal litter into a covered disposable tray and counts each visit. It is the tidiest box here for tracking, and the one whose running costs are entirely set by PetSafe.

Best for: A single-cat household that wants the least mess on the floor and will accept PetSafe’s consumables for the life of the box.

    ≈ £245 / 270 €
